MONDAY MOTIVATION

April 27, 2020: Change

Change.

Change is a crazy thing.

No matter what we do, change will always be a part of life. Change is everywhere. As time goes on, the things we do, the people we are friends with, the places we live, and so many other things, change. Even we change. Over time we act differently, we have different preferences, and we look different too.

This can be a scary thing, but it doesn’t have to be. I know lots of people, including myself, who try to run from change. It is so much easier when things stay the same. When you can keep the same daily routine for a long time, when you have the same commute to work every day, when you interact with lots of the same people every day, it feels good. We love to establish predictable patterns in our life and stick to them. But when a wrench gets thrown into your schedule, there is construction on your normal route to work, or you are put onto a new team with people you have never met before, it can feel like your world is being turned upside down.

Change can look like lots of different things. It could mean something big like moving to a new city, or something small like having to drink a different type of tea because it is all you could find at the store. But no matter what change looks like, it always seems to be scary. Why is that? I think one of the core reasons that change is scary is simply the uncertainty that it contains. We often do not know what consequences, positive or negative, lay behind a new change in our life. And it is in this uncertainty, that many of us get scared. Instead of embracing the change and hoping for the best, many of us, including myself, run.

I consider myself to be someone who is very future-oriented. I like to plan for the future and know what is going to happen. But with all that is going on with COVID-19, the future is looking very unpredictable. The only thing I can count on right now, is that there is going to be lots of change. So I think now is a more fitting time than ever to embrace what is happening. I am a firm believer that with a positive attitude and a firm embrace, you can find a positive side to almost anything.

So that is my challenge to you this week: embrace change. At the end of the day things are going to change whether you want them to or not, so why not embrace what is happening and make the best of the cards you are dealt. Maybe that new tea you got at the grocery store is actually mind-blowingly incredible! So if you drink it with the right attitude, who knows - maybe you’ll switch brands because you want to, not because you have to.

Stay Motivated,
- Dan

Man Runs A Marathon On His Balcony

A french man didn’t let the government-imposed stay at home order keep him from running the marathon he had trained for. Instead of running on the streets, he just ran the entire 26.2 miles on his 23-foot long balcony! Talk about embracing change…

Man Cooks Dinner For Elderly Neighbor

Anthony O'Shaughnessy, a semi finalist on the British version of MasterChef, has been making an extra plate of food for his elderly neighbor every night of quarantine. After finding out that his neighbor was struggling to get food and groceries delivered, O'Shaughnessy has put a full dinner plate, often complete with dessert, on his doorstep every evening. O'Shaughnessy even described this experience as “fun.”
