Resolutions
I know it might be a little early to be thinking about New Year’s resolutions, but for some reason I have recently been really consumed with what to make my 2021 New Year’s resolutions. This is especially weird for me because I have never been someone to make New Year’s resolutions. I don’t think I have ever legitimately made any New Year’s resolutions. But this year (or I guess next year) I really plan to change that.
Looking back on 2020, it goes without saying that it didn’t go according to plan. But one thing I’ve recently thought about was the weird lag time when everyone was thinking “Ok, do I wait for this to blow over...or when do I just bite the bullet and pivot my strategies...” No one knew what was happening, reasonably, but what I saw was that people who had well defined goals managed to pivot the fastest and be affected the least. Obviously there were some exceptions, but one of the common themes I found among people who managed to weather 2020 the best, was that they all had really well defined goals and were committed to making them happen. The world changed rapidly but they continued to charge on. As I thought about this, I decided that maybe what I needed in my life were some better goals. I have always been pretty bad about setting goals for myself; I either make them way too hard or way too easy. So I decided that I was going to think long and hard, and try to come up with the perfect list of 2021 New Year’s resolutions.
As of right now, my list is far from being completed - I am changing it almost every day. But taking this intentional time to define what I want the next year of my life to look like has been really impactful. It has forced me to rethink my priorities, reimagine how I structure my days, and, not to be dramatic, I feel like I have given myself more purpose in life.
So that is my challenge for you this week: make some New Year’s resolutions. Personally, I have found just the process of trying to come up with meaningful resolutions to be really impactful. Don’t make resolutions just because everyone else is doing it - or copy someone else’s resolutions just because it seems like a good resolution. Take some time, sit down alone, and really think about what you want your 2021 to look like. It is crazy how some intentional goal setting time can really change your mindset. And the reason I am saying all of this now, as opposed to closer to the end of the month when most people make their resolutions, is that I think now is the time to start thinking about this. Don’t let yourself get swept up in the holiday season and lose the time to be intentional about this.
Stay Motivated,
-Dan
