Making My Bed
Mom, if you’re reading this, it might’ve taken me a little longer than it should’ve, but I now make my bed every morning! Now let me backtrack a little bit. If I am being honest, I was never good about making my bed growing up. I just never really saw the point - why would I make my bed only to get in again that night and mess it up? That just seemed like a futile task. However, recently I’ve changed my way of thinking.
A lot of people who I have talked to over the years say that they make their bed because they like “getting into a made bed at night.” This never made sense to me. Because whether your bed is made or unmade before you get in it, the second you get in it - it is unmade. But I digress. The reason I have started making my bed is one of accomplishment and confidence. I have been spending lots of time in my room recently due to Covid and most of my classes being online. So the original reason I started making my bed was really one of necessity. When I get into bed I have to move the decorative pillows from my bed onto the ground next to my bed. And if I want to sit at my desk, the pillows are in the way. So instead of moving the pillows to the other side of the room or just putting them on top of the bed, I decided to actually fully make my bed. But after doing this for a few days in a row, I didn’t make my bed one weekend and really felt a difference.
I have learned that making my bed does two positive things for me. First, it makes me feel like I have accomplished something. Making my bed still isn’t my favorite task, but doing it gives me a sense of accomplishment that gets my day started on the right foot. And second, it makes me feel a little more put together and in control of my life. In times like these where life really seems out of control and constantly changing, having a made bed has proven to be a nice constant in my life that helps me maintain composure.
So that is my challenge to you this week: make your bed. Don’t worry if you are a strong anti-bed maker, I promise it really isn’t that difficult. And as futile as this all may sound, I am serious. If you make a conscious effort to make your bed every morning I promise that it’ll make a difference in your life. I know that is kind of an outlandish statement but I mean it. Making your bed provides a quick sense of accomplishment in the morning followed by a heightened sense of composure and confidence throughout the day. This can be making your bed, or really any other small morning task, but sometimes consistently doing seemingly menial tasks can have serious impacts.
Stay Motivated,
-Dan
