Positivity
Have you ever been sure that something bad was going to happen but there was absolutely nothing you could do about it? The other day I went on a casual bike ride to get some fresh air. Near the end of my bike ride I realized that the sky was starting to turn a little grey. I checked the weather before leaving and didn’t see any rain in the forecast, but there was no doubt in my mind that it was going to start raining very soon. I was 2 miles away from my apartment and realized that no matter how fast I tried to go, it would start raining before I got home. There was nothing I could do other than accept the fact that I was gonna get wet. It is in times like these that it is most important to have a positive attitude.
The first day of the fall semester at my university is today. Although I am super excited to be back, I am also highly skeptical of how long we are going to make it before potentially moving back online. I want with all my heart to be able to sustain in-person class, but the headlines of other universities already shutting down is not making me very hopeful. But if there is anything that COVID has taught me, it is that nothing is guaranteed and you have to make the best of every moment. Socially distanced classes, virtual meetings, and no on-campus events is not ideal, but instead of constantly complaining it is important to just dig in and embrace the situation. There are very few things in this world that we, as individuals, can control. But one thing we can control, and something that I think will have a significant impact on how well this transition will go, is our own personal outlooks and attitudes.
Being positive is a contagious thing. The more that you are positive about a situation, the more that people around you will also be positive.
So that is my challenge to you this week: be positive. I know that the current situation is not ideal. In fact, it is quite far from ideal. But, at the end of the day, the single best thing we can do about it (other than follow the guidelines) is simply being positive. If we are able to be positive about all the craziness that COVID is causing, and embrace the few things that we are able to do, I think everyone will be in a much better, and much happier, place.
Stay Motivated,
-Dan
