Rhythm
Lately life has felt a little repetitious. All the days are starting to run together as I continue to stay at home. Today I realized that I haven’t actually worn shoes in 4 weeks. It is at this point, though, that we have to decide whether to complain about the repetition, or settle into a rhythm.
But what is the difference between repetition and rhythm?
Repetition and rhythm are synonyms, but they have very different connotations. In this context, repetition is often seen as monotonous, drawn out, tedious, or annoying. And to be honest some of that is valid. No one wishes to be stuck in their homes like this and there are lots of things that can start to get on your nerves after a while. I mean, take me with this newsletter, my original intent was to write something new based on my week, but I have not had many unique experiences to write about. This repetition can get old really quickly.
So then what is a rhythm? In this context, I would say rhythm means calm, acceptance, control, peace, structure, and most importantly: purpose. Having a rhythm means that you are doing everything with purpose and with a plan. You know what you are doing, when you are doing it, and why you are doing it. This is a big distinction.
People complain about repetition because they often don’t want to be doing it and do not feel in control. But people strive to find a good rhythm in their lives.
Honestly, I think the difference here is nothing more than a mindset. If you can take the repetition, accept it, and make a plan to attack it, you have given yourself purpose - and thus turned your repetition into a rhythm.
So that is my challenge to you this week: define your rhythm. It can be a daily rhythm, a weekly rhythm, or anything else you can define to give yourself a purpose and put yourself in control of your situation.
I think this little bit of intentionality and mindset change could go a long way.
Stay Motivated,
-Dan
