Snow
As someone who grew up in Florida, I am not a huge fan of the cold. Sure seasons are nice, but at what cost? Well I am here to tell you that the cost of seasons is the bitter cold - something I thought Dallas, Texas would not have, but wow am I being proved wrong at the moment. At the time of me writing this there is about an inch of snow on the ground, it is 11 degrees outside, and the feels like temperature is -4. At the time of you receiving this email, the feels like temperature here is forecasted to be -11. Now it might just sound like I’m complaining, and that is because I am, but really what I want to talk about today is making the best of every situation.
It is no secret that I am not a fan of the cold. Sure a little crisp breeze while you’re sitting around a fire can be nice, but outside of those very few circumstances I have no desire to interact with cold weather. However, unfortunately for me, my opinion is not considered when the weather is being created. So what do I do - complain just a little bit, get that out of my system, and then move on and try to make the best of it! Today that meant taking some fun/cheesy valentine’s photos with my girlfriend. Tomorrow it might mean a snowball fight, who knows. What I am trying to say is most things have some sort of silver lining.
So no matter what the negative thing is for you, whether it be cold weather or anything else you don’t like but also don’t have any control over - take a second to get the dread or complaining out of your system, and then embrace the day. I think it is often really easy to get caught up in everything we don’t like about a situation and ignore any possible positive outcomes. I know my cold weather analogy is a little silly but I hope you see the point. Maybe you don’t like the rain, or maybe you’re sad that a friend is moving to another city, or your favorite restaurant stopped serving your favorite dish. Whatever it may be, we often find ourselves in situations that aren’t necessarily in our control, and it is when we are in situations like this that it is really up to us to decide our reaction.
So that is my challenge to you this week: find the silver lining. In some situations this might be easier or harder than it is in others, but at the end of the day I think this is so important. It is human nature to instinctively be negative, but there are studies that show how those who consciously and consistently try to find the good things are actually able to reprogram how they think, and overtime find it easier and easier to find the good in things rather than the bad. I think that is a way we should all strive to live.
Stay Motivated,
-Dan
