Again
Ok... here we go again. As a college student today marks the start of the second semester of the school year, and more specifically, the second full semester that will be completed with all of the COVID restrictions. Before last semester I felt very uneasy and a little worried about what the semester would hold - there were so many unknowns. I will say I think my school did a good job navigating everything, but it was a far from normal semester. And although last semester was actually really good, all things considered, the beginning of this semester holds a little more apprehension.
Don’t get me wrong - I’m really excited for this semester and excited to graduate in May, but school during COVID is just different. So I got thinking about this semester and what I had to look forward to and be excited about. In doing this, I decided to physically make a list of good things about this upcoming semester. I know that’s a very unoriginal thing to do - pro/cons lists are very mainstream, but I can’t remember the last time I hand wrote a list like this.
I’m not sure about you, but I always tend to do things like this in my head; I’d think about it but never actually physically write it down. One of my recent goals has been to journal more and it has actually proved very helpful. I know this is probably the least surprising/groundbreaking/shocking thing I could be saying, but it’s true. Writing things down really helps!
I often make pro/con lists, gratitude lists, and sort through lots of tough thoughts mentally. So when I decided to physically write down a list of things I had to look forward to this semester I was shocked at how much the exercise helped me. After just a few minutes I had a page full of things to look forward to.
So that is my challenge to you this week: write things down that you’re excited for. It’s pretty fun to have a list of exciting things to look forward to - it really boosted my morale. If you are an avid journaler, you might think all of this is obvious. But I have a hunch that most people don’t actually physically write things down when doing stuff like this. So next time you are making a pro/con list or anything of that nature, actually write it down on a piece of paper - it is shockingly better than trying to do exercises like this in your head.
Stay Motivated,
-Dan
